“FI-1000 ink” is not a complete purchasing specification. An inquiry also needs the required color, the code on the cartridge currently in use, the printer or OEM equipment model, and the country where the machine operates. Without those details, two buyers asking for “FI-1000 black” may not be requesting the same supply configuration.
This guide focuses on identifying the CMYK cartridges and preparing an accurate inquiry. It is separate from our FI-1000 field-validation story, which discusses practical testing.
What Is the HP FI-1000?
The HP OEM Fixed Imager 1000, commonly shortened to FI-1000, is a PageWide print engine used in equipment built for applications such as short-run packaging and envelopes. HP specifies a print width of up to 297 mm (11.7 inches). It is not the same product family as a Canon PFI-1000 cartridge, despite the similar-looking number.
Because FI-1000 is an engine incorporated into equipment from different manufacturers, record the complete machine make and model, not only “FI-1000,” when requesting replacement supplies.
FI-1000 Uses Four Separate Ink Colors
The FI-1000 ink set consists of cyan, magenta, yellow, and black. HP’s FI-1000 technical data sheet identifies the following original supply references:
- Cyan: 3UB06A
- Magenta: 3UB07A
- Yellow: 3UB08A
- Black: 3UB09A in the referenced HP data sheet
Do not rely on this list alone to place an order. Equipment suppliers may publish their own supply numbers or offer a different black-cartridge configuration. For example, a distributor may list a different black reference and fill volume from those in the HP engine data sheet. The safest reference is the label on the cartridge currently approved for the buyer’s machine.
Why the Black Cartridge Needs an Extra Check
Black is often ordered in a different quantity from each color, so a black-cartridge mismatch can affect a large part of a repeat order. Before asking for a price, photograph the entire black cartridge label, including its part number, capacity information, and any equipment-supplier reference.
Ask the supplier to state exactly which black cartridge is being quoted. Do not assume that cartridges with different black part numbers or fill volumes are interchangeable simply because they are described as “FI-1000 black.”
Five Details to Confirm Before Requesting Samples
1. Equipment model
Provide the name and full model number of the finished printer or printing system. A photo of its machine label is useful if the model has several versions.
2. Current cartridge labels
Send clear photos of the cartridges currently working in the equipment. Include all four colors, with particular attention to the black cartridge’s full code and capacity.
3. Country of use
State the destination country and where the equipment was originally supplied. This gives the supplier the information needed to review any market-specific supply or recognition requirements.
4. Product configuration
Specify whether the inquiry is for a finished, filled compatible cartridge, a sample set, or another configuration. Confirm that the quoted product includes the required recognition component and is ready for the intended test.
5. Quantity by color
Give a separate quantity for C, M, Y, and K. “100 sets” can be ambiguous if black consumption or stocking levels differ from the other colors.
Sample First, Then Fix the Bulk-Order Specification
For a new compatible supply, test the proposed cartridge configuration in the buyer’s actual equipment before approving a volume order. Record the printer model, current firmware version, tested cartridge codes, and the results for recognition, installation, print output, and normal production use.
Once the sample is approved, put its exact configuration into the purchase order. That makes it easier to confirm that the bulk shipment matches what was tested. Our separate FI-1000 validation article discusses the production-side testing in more detail.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is FI-1000 the same as Canon PFI-1000?
No. HP FI-1000 is a printing-engine family used in packaging and related applications. Canon PFI-1000 is a separate ink-tank family. Their supplies should never be matched by the number “1000” alone.
Can I order using only “FI-1000 CMYK”?
That phrase identifies the general color set, but it does not confirm the finished equipment model, current cartridge codes, black configuration, or required quantities. Send the existing supply labels for a more reliable match.
Should a successful sample test be documented?
Yes. Keep the tested codes, equipment details, and results with the purchasing record so the approved configuration can be checked against a repeat or bulk order.
Brand names and original part numbers are used solely to identify the intended printing system. Yescolor supplies compatible products for selected applications; compatibility should be confirmed for the buyer’s specific equipment before ordering.
